USDA Approves ColorFlex® Tomato Color Meter

Reston, VA, USA - August 2003- The HunterLab ColorFlex Tomato Color Meter system has met the criteria set by the USDA for the evaluation of color in tomato products in accordance with the U.S. standards for grades of tomato paste, tomato sauce, tomato catsup and tomato juice. As recommended by the USDA, the ColorFlex Tomato Meter's standard for scores is traceable to the UC Davis master standard. The Tomato Meter eliminates subjectivity of visual methods and gives reproducible objective measurements. In practice the tomato sample is poured or spooned into a sample cup. The cup is placed onto the instrument measurement port. By pressing one button on the instrument the measurement is made. TJ (Juice Score), TK (Catsup Score), TP (Paste Score), TS (Sauce Score) or AB (a/b ratio) will be displayed. The Tomato Meter can be connected to a printer if hard copy data is desired. The HunterLab LabScan® XE and D25A instruments were also tested and approved.
